Serena Williams Gets Real About the Challenges of Being a Working Mom: It’s ‘Not Easy’

Her full name is Serena Jameka Williams; her sister Venus is just 15 months older. She has two half-sisters – Lyndrea and Isha Price. A third, Yetunde, passed away in 2003.
She has written and co-authored books like “How to Play Tennis: Learn how to play the Williams sisters’ way” (2004), “Venus and Serena: Serving From The Hip: 10 Rules for Living, Loving, and Winning” (2005), “On the Line” (2009) and her autobiography “My Life: Queen of the Court” (2009). Serena’s favorite author is Maya Angelou.

A certified fashion designer, Serena entered the fashion world in 2003 with a clothing line called “Aneres” (her first name spelled backwards). In March 2018, she was granted a trademark for a cosmetics line under the same name.
On Jan. 28, 2017, about eight weeks pregnant, Serena defeated Venus 6-4, 6-4 to win her seventh Australian Open title in Melbourne (pictured), setting a new Open-era record with 23 Grand Slam wins.
Her favorite city is Rome, Italy. She met her husband Alexis Ohanian there in 2015.
In September 2011, she was appointed a UNICEF international Goodwill Ambassador and in 2017 she became the ambassador of Allstate Foundation Purple Purse, an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence.
Her favorite animals are dogs and tigers. She has a Yorkshire Terrier named Chip.
Apart from English, she can speak French and Spanish and some Italian.
The only player to have defeated Serena more than once in a Grand Slam singles final is Venus – at the U.S. Open in 2001 and at Wimbledon in 2008.
Serena and Venus have a fierce on-court rivalry and have played each other 32 times. Serena has won 19 of those encounters, including the most recent – during the 2018 US Open when she beat her sister 6-1, 6-2. Their first ever professional game against each other was during the Australian Open in 1998; Venus won that one 7-6(4), 6-1. Most recently, Serena had to pull out of the 2019 Italian Open ahead of her match against Venus, due to an ongoing left knee injury.

Serena succumbed to a shock defeat during the 2018 US Open final, losing to Japan’s Naomi Osaka. The result aside, the match will be remembered for the on-court spat she had with chair umpire Carlos Ramos. She received three warnings in quick succession, starting with one for illegal coaching. The result meant Osaka became the first Japanese woman to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Williams returned to the sport after overcoming a complicated pregnancy. She began by competing in the doubles event at the Fed Cup; she partnered her sister, but they lost 6-2, 6-3 to the Dutch pair of Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs on Feb. 11, 2018.
She has six US Open singles titles to her name, as of June 2019, leaving her tied with former great Chris Evert (R) for the outright record.
Serena was only a teen when she won her first Grand Slam – the 1999 US Open. She beat Switzerland’s Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final.
Williams has been ranked No. 1 for a total of 319 weeks in her career so far. She is third overall on the list of female tennis players who’ve spent the most weeks on top of the rankings, behind fellow American Martina Navratilova (332) and Germany’s Steffi Graff (377). She does, however, hold the record for most consecutive weeks on top with 186; she shares that with Graff.
To date, Williams has competed at the Olympics four times (2000-2016). She has four gold medals to her name – three for doubles and one for singles.
Serena is associated with numerous charity organizations and runs a non-profit, the Serena Williams Fund, which has helped set up schools in Jamaica, Kenya, and Uganda.

In 2007, the tennis great made an appearance in the music video “I Want You” by American rapper Common (pictured) and another for her friend Beyoncé for the song “Sorry” in the album Lemonade (2016). She has also featured in the film “Pixels” (2015), starring Adam Sandler and Kevin James. She has voiced several animated shows and appeared on TV shows as well.
Serena and Venus have played each other in nine Grand Slam singles finals, most recently playing for the 2017 Australian Open title that Serena won 6-4, 6-4. Overall, she has a commanding 7-2 lead over her sister.
Williams reached a Grand Slam final for the 13th consecutive year at Wimbledon 2019. She, however, lost the title to Simona Halep, who went on to win 6-2, 6-2, on July 13, 2019.
To date, Serena has claimed 72 singles and 23 doubles titles. The haul includes a staggering 39 Grand Slams – 23 singles, 14 doubles and two mixed doubles.

Serena Williams is opening up about the realities of being a working mom. In an Instagram post on Friday, the 38-year-old tennis pro candidly discussed the challenges she’s faced while raising her 2-year-old daughter, Olympia, and continuing to compete. Williams shares her daughter with Alexis Ohanian, whom she wed in 2017.
“I am not sure who took this picture but Working and being a mom is not easy,” Williams captioned a shot of herself holding a sleeping Olympia in a car. “I am often exhausted, stressed, and then I go play a professional tennis match.”
“We keep going,” she continued. “I am so proud and inspired by the women who do it day in and day out. I’m proud to be this baby’s mama.”
